Online support group for new and expecting parents
This support group is led by Ms Debbie Atanasio, where she uses her lived experience of postpartum mental illness to help other parents who are passing through difficult times during the peripartum. Ms Debbie Atanasio had taken part in various webinars with local (Richmond Foundation) and international charities (Postpartum Support International (PSI) and Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP)) with the aim of setting up this peer support group for parents in Malta. In addition, she helped set up a partnership with one of the UK’s leading maternal mental health charities; Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP) and she is acting as a regional representative volunteer.
The peer support group is a meeting where pregnant women and mothers with young children, as well as fathers, come together in a safe place to exchange ideas, share experiences, give and receive information and at the same time, offer and receive support in breastfeeding, child rearing and women’s health. The sessions are conducted online once a month and are provided for free for our members.
Baby massage sessions
PIMHA is sponsoring free baby massage sessions to our members to promote parent-infant attachment and ensure early healthy relationships. Sessions are conducted at the Malta Midwives Association by Ms Denise Holmes, a qualified Infant Massage Instructor and Midwife.
Training seminars and conferences for healthcare professionals
PIMHA has at its core a desire to ensure that women meet professionals across the whole perinatal mental health care pathway who have the skills, competencies and expertise to identify, refer, assess, treat and manage their conditions as effectively as possible. PIMHA’s training seminars help various health care professionals to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities when caring for perinatal women and their families.
